A former gasworks site in Berlin is being remediated with thermal support in a pilot project.

The subsoil of a former gasworks site in Berlin is contaminated with tar oil and has led to the contamination of the groundwater with PHCs and BTX.
The existing Pump&Treat system serves as hydraulic barrier, but the discharge of pollutants has been declining for some time.
To counteract this, the source of the damage is being heated to a target temperature of approx. 45 °C as part of an in-situ thermal pilot test lasting several months using 8 electrically operated heating elements up to 10 m below surface level.
the heating reduces the viscosity and surface tension of the tar oil and increases its solubility in water. The pollutants are thus mobilized and the pollutant discharge increases significantly.
The temperature development and other parameters are measured continuously at 10 monitoring levels.
