BAFU-Symposium on ‘Contaminated Sites in Switzerland’

On 21 October 2026, the Federal Office for the Environment ("BAFU", Bundesamt für Umwelt) organised the 5th Swiss Contaminated Sites Symposium in Biel. The theme, ‘PFAS – from regulation to practice’, attracted around 450 participants, mainly from Switzerland but also from Germany, France and Austria.

Our PFAS remediation projects

Our portfolio for remediating PFAS contamination includes soil washing, adsorption onto PFASoptima® activated carbon, ion exchange and foam fractionation. Since 2009, we have carried out around 80 projects, including six in Switzerland (see Figures 1–4).

A promising, innovative pilot project is also currently underway in the canton of Zurich, accompanied by laboratory analyses. For the first time in Switzerland, PFAS are being removed in situ from the unsaturated soil zone.
