Remediation of the Bonfol hazardous waste landfill, Switzerland
Excavation of approx. 200,000 tons of hazardous waste and approx. 50,000 tons of contaminated soil within the closed hall.
In the 1960s and 1970s, mainly waste from the chemical industry was deposited in a former clay pit. At the time, the landfill complied with all current regulations and permits. 25 years after its closure, the canton of Jura demanded the complete removal of the landfill.
Following a functional call for tenders with an ideas competition, the "Groupment DIB", consisting of Züblin Umwelttechnik GmbH, Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH and other companies, won the contract to carry out the requested measures. The coherent concept with a movable column-free hall with a span of up to 150 m and two remote-controlled crane grab systems suspended from the hall structure for waste excavation was convincing, also in terms of execution.
